A director would be responsible for managing employees, ordering and keeping track of supplies, managing the budget, making certain that the grounds and facilities are properly maintained, and, most significantly, making certain that all residents are well cared for and happy. If there is a problem it is usually the director's task to handle and solve the problem. The director would also be responsible for reporting to the the government body overseeing the nursing home, if it is not a private facility or the owner of the nursing home. The director will also meet with senior staff members to talk about performance of the staff, the budget, and any other problems that there may be in the home.

The director is responsible for upholding the rules and regulations set out in the home's policies and procedures documents. Rules and regulations may be discussed with the owners and employees sometimes to make sure that the residents are being taken care of with up to date procedures and policies and that the home is being run in a suitable manner. It is the responsibility of the employees to follow the policies and procedures of the facility. A great deal of research is required to ensure that the rules and regulations are up to date with provincial laws. Normally, this research will lead the director to know if there are any improvements that must be made to improve the nursing home's quality. The director has to speak with the residents to be certain that they are satisfied with the level of care that they are being given. Any issues which arise must be handled and resolved. The director determines whether or not new kinds of machines are appropriate for the nursing home and if the equipment could be afforded.

A director of the nursing home is responsible for interviewing new applicants and deciding which ones are right for the jobs required. The director decides whether there is a need for new staff, that there is enough money in the budget to afford new employees, and whether the applicant's education and experience are right for the job. It is also the job of the director to fire any employees who are not meeting the nursing home's quality standards. The director has to make certain that all of the employees at the nursing home is doing their job properly. They would also ensure that each and every staff member has the necessary training and would arrange training programs when necessary. All of the employees in a nursing home, like licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, certified nurse assistants, therapists, volunteers and physicians report to the director of the nursing home.

The director of a nursing home truly has a lot of tasks. Good directors would have a handle on all the things that goes on inside the facility, would not delay tasks unnecessarily, and would expect a high quality of care from its employees.
